Her approach to Yoga is inspired by her teaching lineage based on Desikachars’ belief that yoga is to be adapted to each individual and their specific needs. Shelley has a PhD (Deakin University) which examined the way we in the West, make sense of Yoga and how we integrate it into our lives and understandings of health and wellness. She is attuned to Levels 1 & 2 Usui Reiki (Crystal Heart Reiki, Melbourne) and has since completed over 300 hours of Reiki treatments. Shelley has travelled widely including to India where she lived for some time and studied a form of Zen-style meditation in silent retreats. After her return to Australia and moving to Far North Queensland she completed an 18 month Diploma of Craniosacral Therapy (Craniosacral Australia) and has since performed over 250 hours of treatments and continues to receive guidance and mentoring from her yoga and craniosacral teachers. Shelley is deeply inspired by the natural healing ability that lies waiting within the biology of our bodies and how this can help reduce the stresses of daily human life. Shelley believes that compassion, understanding, kindness and warmth are essential to our healing and offers these qualities to each person she consults for treatment.

The Healing power of Craniosacral Therapy
by Shelley Cowden
During our lives most of us experience a vast landscape of emotions and experiences. From the moment we are born our bodies and minds attempt to absorb and protect us from as much harm as possible. But sometimes these systems become overwhelmed. Our human biology has a large task, adapting to a quickening pace of life as well as the demands of work and family and the impact of pollutants in our environment, to name but a few.
We can only store so much inside us before we become full – an experience we may have noticed in the form of pain, low mood/depression, fatigue, anxiety, illness, trauma or addiction. Just as we water a plant we care for, clean our homes or tend to a garden, our bodies and minds need to be nurtured and regularly maintained in order to stay healthy and thrive.
The gentle yet potent modality of Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a way to ‘unblock’ tension and restore free flow of energy (chi/ki/prana) to the parts of ourselves that have become constricted or shut down due to trauma or illness and daily stresses. CST works with your own ‘craniosacral rhythm’ (the subtle movement of cerebrospinal fluid within the body) to release stored trauma within the body-mind and the feeling senses of the heart and emotions.
The Craniosacral system includes the cranium, membrane system, spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid, sacrum and central nervous system. Trauma to one part of this system affects the whole. By gently moving in harmony with the body, tensions and imbalances are released and over time, even deep traumas may be entirely resolved.
So how does this feel in a full Craniosacral Therapy session? You may like to think of it as somewhere between a Reiki session and a therapeutic massage. CST is quite light in touch - no more than 5grams – yet is remarkably potent and can bring about transformative and lasting healing effects within the body and emotions. This takes place as the practitioner senses the subtle movements of the body, and craniosacral rhythm and guides your body to release tension at various specific points.
A CST session or series of sessions can bring deep relief to your whole being and allow you to be free to move forward in life with greater ease of body and mind.
